BJJ From Fear to Confidence Palenque, Mexico
With JoseLuis Saenz
Open Dates
You’ve wanted to try BJJ. Something keeps stopping you.
Maybe it’s the fear of walking into a gym full of people who already know what they’re doing. Maybe it’s not knowing the language of the sport. Maybe you just don’t know where to start, and starting in front of strangers feels like too much.
This retreat exists for exactly that feeling.
Seven days in the Palenque jungle, learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from zero with a private coach who is on the mat with you every session, in a group small enough that nobody gets lost, in a place where the environment makes everything feel a little more possible.
What you actually learn
BJJ is not about strength. It is about leverage, timing, and understanding how bodies move in relation to each other. A smaller person can control a larger one. A calmer person almost always beats a panicked one. You don’t need to be fast or strong you need to learn the principles, and then let your body start to understand them.
During the week we cover: how to fall safely, basic positions and posture, submissions and escapes, takedowns and clinch work, drilling, and guided situational rolling with a coach present adjusting in real time. Everything is explained before it is practiced. You will never be thrown into something without understanding what is about to happen and why.
How the training works
Two sessions on the mat every day morning technique and drilling, afternoon application and review. Small group, rarely more than four to six people. No sparring with strangers. No pressure to go harder than your body is ready for.
The gap between sessions is for recovery: ice bath with breathwork preparation, rest, food. A body that doesn’t recover between sessions doesn’t improve between sessions.
The recovery is part of the training
Ice bath with breathwork preparation breath first, then cold. The same protocol I taught divers for twenty years: staying calm while your body sends every signal to escape. It also accelerates muscle recovery in a way nothing else does at this price point.
Temazcal the traditional Mayan sweat lodge, prepared with breathwork. Heat, darkness, steam, and intention. Most guests say this is the session they remember longest.
Three chef-prepared meals daily cooked fresh in our own kitchen, built for someone training twice a day. Real food, real protein, no supplements for sale.
What makes this different
I’m José Luis Sáenz I coach and teach BJJ under Professor Mark Stables, Carlson Gracie México lineage. I spent over twenty years underwater training divers and dive instructors across Mexico and Egypt. That job had one purpose: teaching people to stay functional under pressure. The breath was always the answer. Now I do the same thing on the mat.
I’m in every session. On the mat with you, not watching from the side. In a group of four to six people, that coaching attention is real.
There is no other dedicated BJJ beginner retreat in Mexico. Not in Tulum, not in Mexico City, not in Oaxaca. This is it.
The environment
Villas Adriana Wellness Village twelve rooms in the Chiapas rainforest, three kilometers from the Palenque archaeological site. From some rooms you can see the Temple of king Pakal through the canopy. Open-air training mat surrounded by jungle. Birds at 5am. Howler monkeys in the distance. Temazcal in the evening. Waterfalls and Mayan ruins when the week calls for them.
You could learn BJJ fundamentals in a gym near home. You’re here because the environment is part of it.
What you leave with
The techniques and something harder to name. The knowledge that you can walk into an uncomfortable situation, stay calm, and figure it out. That is what BJJ teaches faster than almost anything else, and it is what the ice bath, the temazcal, and the mat all have in common.
By the end of the week you’ll walk into any BJJ academy near home ready not hoping nobody notices it’s your first time.
After you leave
90 days of remote coaching included: your drilling sequences written down, a training and nutrition plan built around whatever gym you join near home, WhatsApp access, and monthly check-ins. The retreat is where you start. The 90 days is where it becomes real.
Twelve rooms. Small groups. One coach on the mat with you, every session, every day.
